The entire Costa Azahar is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with castles, churches and mountains. There are many guide books available in local newsagents etc., and all we can do here is give you the briefest taste of some of the places to visit within a few kilometres of Alcossebre
Alcala de Chivert is only ten kilometres inland [see the Page "Alcala"] but just across from this pleasant Spanish pueblo is the fascinating Castle of Xivert, which was inhabited until the last century, and is currently undergoing repair and renovation.

Below the castle are the remains of an Arabic village, once well populated and enjoying the protection of the castle. Here you can still wander from room to room in the long deserted village, and wonder what life must have been like for the people in those days, without computers, cars, internet or even electricity.

Construction of the castle dates from the 10th century, although archaeological findings suggest the site was inhabited before that time.

Peñiscola… with the famous impregnable castle jutting out into the sea, which was used in the filming of “El Cid”. A delightful coastal resort, with a ten kilometre sandy beach ideal for family holidays.

There is a coastal 'road' - not for the faint-hearted - between Peñiscola and Alcossebre: a tranquil 15 kilometres running along the edge of the sea with numerous small shingle beaches ideal for picnics.

Slightly further inland yet within an hour's drive are the beautiful.....Maestrat Mountains, with rugged peaks, mountain lakes, and many Spanish pueblos where one can usually find a convenient bar or restaurant for a meal or 'menu del dia'.

These are the lakes at  La Senia on the Vinarós

to Morella mountain road.

No one should miss a trip to Morella - a fascinating walled town some 60 kms from Alcossebre where the town houses still enjoy the protection of almost 3 km of town walls, and the entrance to the town is through the medieval gateway.

Towering above the town and, indeed, the whole plain, is the 12th century castle.
